{"id":544550,"date":"2026-08-27T02:04:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/increased-controls-on-ethylene-oxide-at-borders\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:04:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:04:34","slug":"increased-controls-on-ethylene-oxide-at-borders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/increased-controls-on-ethylene-oxide-at-borders\/","title":{"rendered":"Increased controls on ethylene oxide at borders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since September 2020, very high levels of ethylene oxide (a substance not approved at EU level), first in batches of sesame seeds from India and then in other foodstuffs, have been notified via RASFF. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/veille-reglementaire\/renforcement-des-controles-de-graines-de-sesame-en-provenance-dinde\/\">Regulation 2020\/1540 had already reinforced controls on sesame seeds from India.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32021R2246&amp;qid=1640094015731\">Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021\/2246<\/a> has just been published in the OJEU. It temporarily increases controls on other foodstuffs at the borders and imposes special conditions on the dispatch of foodstuffs due to the risk of ETO contamination.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 6 January 2022, controls on ETO levels in the following foodstuffs will be increased at the borders:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carob beans, carob bean mucilage and thickeners, whether or not modified, from Morocco.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spicy sauces (tomato ketchup and other tomato sauces) from Mexico.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peppers of the genus Capsicum (other than sweet) from Uganda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consignments of the goods listed below must be accompanied by an official certificate stating that the products have been sampled and analysed, confirming compliance with the ETO MRLs set out in European legislation. The analysis results must be attached to this certificate:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Xanthan gum from China.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carob (including carob mucilage and thickeners), guar gum, various spices (pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, aniseed, star anise, fennel, coriander, cumin, caraway seeds, juniper berries, ginger, saffron, turmeric, thyme, bay leaves, curry, etc.), sauce preparations and prepared sauces, calcium carbonate and food supplements containing botanical substances from India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food supplements containing botanical products and instant noodles from South Korea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carob (including carob mucilage and thickeners) from Malaysia and Turkey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instant noodles from Vietnam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In France, the DGCCRF regularly updates the list of non-compliant product recalls following an exceedance of the ETO MRL.
