{"id":544546,"date":"2026-08-27T02:04:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/ban-on-e-171-as-a-food-additive-in-the-eu\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:04:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:04:29","slug":"ban-on-e-171-as-a-food-additive-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/ban-on-e-171-as-a-food-additive-in-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Ban on E 171 as a food additive in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32022R0063&amp;qid=1642599515957\">Regulation (EU) 2022\/63<\/a> has just been published in the OJEU.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It bans the use of <strong>titanium dioxide (E 171)<\/strong> as a food additive.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May 2021, EFSA updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/fr\/efsajournal\/pub\/6585\">safety assessment of titanium dioxide<\/a> and no longer considers it safe for health as a food additive, particularly due to genotoxicity risks.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The regulation states that foodstuffs produced before <strong>7 February 2022<\/strong> may continue to be placed on the market until <strong>7 August 2022<\/strong>. They may remain on the market until their best-before or use-by date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission also commits to reviewing, within three years of 7 February 2022, the need to keep titanium dioxide on the Union list of food additives for exclusive use as a colourant in <strong>medicines<\/strong>, or to remove it from that list.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France had already taken the lead by publishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/jorf\/id\/JORFTEXT000044791848\">order of 21 December 2021<\/a>, which extended the suspension of the placing on the market of foodstuffs containing titanium dioxide until the end of 2022 on its territory.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a reminder, in animal feed, <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32021R2090&amp;qid=1638378276680\">Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021\/2090<\/a> also banned <strong>titanium dioxide (E 171)<\/strong> as an additive for all animal species.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TiO2 was previously authorised without time limit as a colourant in food for dogs and cats and in feed for all animal species under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this ban in animal feed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Existing stocks of TiO2 and premixes containing it must be withdrawn from the market by <strong>20 March 2022<\/strong> at the latest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feed materials, as well as compound feed produced with this additive or premixes containing it before 20 March 2022, must be withdrawn from the market by <strong>20 June 2022<\/strong> at the latest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that your Phytocontrol laboratory is able to detect and characterise titanium dioxide nanoparticles using its state-of-the-art technology.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
