2020 annual pesticide report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA has just published its <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2022.7215\">report for 2020<\/a> on pesticide residues in food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results of monitoring programmes (European Union Coordinated Control Programme (EUCP) + national programmes):<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of <strong>88,141 samples<\/strong> were analysed and <strong>659 pesticides and metabolites<\/strong> tested for.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>94.9%<\/strong> of samples analysed under the European pesticide monitoring programme for food were found to comply with MRLs, of which 54.6% were free of quantifiable residues.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>5.1%<\/strong> of samples exceeded the MRLs (3.6% were deemed non-compliant taking into account measurement uncertainty).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total number of samples decreased by 9.3% compared to 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exceedances remain higher for unprocessed foods than for processed foods (5.3% versus 2.6%, respectively). 28.9% of unprocessed products showed multiple residue detections compared to 11.6% for processed products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple residues were reported in a total of 24,057 samples, i.e. 27%, as in 2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For baby food products, <strong>1,641<\/strong> samples were analysed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>91.7% free of quantifiable residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6.5% contained quantified residues below the MRL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.7% were non-compliant (quantifications above the MRL).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For organic products, <strong>5,783<\/strong> samples were analysed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>80.1% free of quantifiable residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18.4% contained quantified residues below the MRL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.5% were non-compliant (quantifications above the MRL).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For products of animal origin, <strong>12,142<\/strong> samples were analysed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>92.0% free of quantifiable residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6.8% contained quantified residues below the MRL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.2% were non-compliant (quantifications above the MRL).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The substances most frequently quantified were copper compounds, DDT, hexachlorobenzene, thiacloprid and mercury.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For honey and beekeeping products, <strong>879<\/strong> samples were analysed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>80.7% free of quantifiable residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>13.8% contained quantified residues below the MRL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5.5% contained quantified residues above the MRL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The substances found in the samples were neonicotinoids (thiacloprid and acetamiprid).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results of the 2020 European Union Coordinated Control Programme (EUCP):<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of <strong>12,077 samples<\/strong> were analysed and <strong>186 pesticides tested for<\/strong> in <strong>12 food products<\/strong> (carrots, cauliflowers, kiwis, onions, oranges, pears, potatoes, dried beans, brown rice, rye, bovine liver and poultry fat).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>98.3%<\/strong> of samples analysed were found to comply with MRLs, of which 68.5% were free of quantifiable residues.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>1.7%<\/strong> of samples exceeded the MRLs (0.9% were deemed non-compliant taking into account measurement uncertainty).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following pesticides, not authorised in the EU, were quantified above the MRL:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On samples grown in the EU: dimethoate, chlorpropham, chlorpyrifos, iprodione, linuron, triadimenol, diphenylamine, thiacloprid, hexachlorobenzene, thiamethoxam, dieldrin, chlorpyrifos-methyl and fipronil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On imported samples: chlorpyrifos, bromopropylate, tricyclazole, carbendazim, iprodione, profenofos, fenitrothion, fenbutatin oxide, hexaconazole, carbaryl, triazophos, spirodiclofen, thiamethoxam.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For products of animal origin, fat-soluble persistent organic pollutant pesticides are the substances most frequently detected and quantified: DDT, hexachlorobenzene and beta-HCH.
