<\/p>\n\n

Recommendation (EU) 2022\/561<\/strong><\/a> on monitoring the presence of glycoalkaloids<\/strong> in potatoes and potato-derived products has just been published in the OJEU.<\/p>\n\n

Many plants of the Solanaceae<\/em> family contain glycoalkaloids, which are natural toxins. The most commonly found are \u03b1-solanine<\/strong> and \u03b1-chaconine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

According to EFSA’s 2020 risk assessment, glycoalkaloid concentrations are 3 to 10 times higher in the skin than in the flesh of potatoes. There are also significant variations in these concentrations depending on the potato variety. Storage conditions, particularly light and temperature, are mainly responsible for the increase in solanine content.<\/p>\n\n

In humans, the acute toxicity effects of \u03b1-solanine and \u03b1-chaconine present in potatoes include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.<\/p>\n\n

Good agricultural practices, good storage and transport conditions, and good manufacturing practices can reduce the presence of glycoalkaloids in potatoes and processed potato-based products.<\/p>\n\n

This recommendation sets an indicative level for the sum of \u03b1-chaconine and \u03b1-solanine in potatoes and potato-derived products at 100 mg\/kg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Above this threshold, an investigation should be conducted to determine the factors behind these levels.<\/p>\n\n
