{"id":544478,"date":"2026-08-27T01:24:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T23:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/update-of-reference-doses-for-allergens-proposed-by-the-scicom\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T01:24:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T23:24:47","slug":"update-of-reference-doses-for-allergens-proposed-by-the-scicom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/update-of-reference-doses-for-allergens-proposed-by-the-scicom\/","title":{"rendered":"Update of reference doses for allergens proposed by the SciCom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the absence of notification thresholds or legal reference doses for food allergens, the AFSCA Scientific Committee was asked in 2017 to give its opinion on the reference doses to be used for allergen labelling control.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following new additional clinical data and new available information, the Scientific Committee has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.favv-afsca.be\/comitescientifique\/avis\/2022\/_documents\/Avis08-2022_SciCom2021-22_Dosedereferenceallergenes.pdf\">updated its opinion on the reference doses<\/a> it proposed for allergens in 2017. These are the reference doses for crustacean, egg, fish, peanut, soya, milk, celery, mustard, sesame seed, lupin, mollusc and certain tree nut allergens, listed in Regulation (EU) No 1169\/2011.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Belgian Scientific Committee recommends applying the reference doses (RDs) established by the FAO\/WHO. The limit used is the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval of the ED05 (the dose triggering an allergic reaction in 5% of a sensitive population) as the reference dose for assessing the risk associated with ingesting allergenic foods.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Allergenic food<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Proposed reference dose<\/strong> <strong>(mg of allergenic food protein)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Egg<\/td><td>2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Milk<\/td><td>2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Celery<\/td><td>1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Mustard<\/td><td>1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Peanut<\/td><td>2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hazelnuts<\/td><td>3<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, Brazil nuts and macadamia nuts<\/td><td>1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Lupin<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sesame seeds<\/td><td>2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Crustaceans<\/td><td>200<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Molluscs<\/td><td>200<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Fish<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Soya<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Wheat (and all cereals containing gluten)<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To assess the risk of an allergen&#8217;s presence in a food product for a sensitive person, the value obtained by multiplying the detected allergen concentration by the portion size is generally compared, in practice, to the reference dose.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed RDs must not be used as a basis for claiming that a product is &#8220;free from&#8221; a specific allergen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reference doses proposed in this opinion do not concern allergens added as ingredients.
