{"id":544394,"date":"2026-08-27T01:00:48","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T23:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/regulation-of-green-tea-extracts-containing-epigallocatechin-gallate\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T01:00:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T23:00:48","slug":"regulation-of-green-tea-extracts-containing-epigallocatechin-gallate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/regulation-of-green-tea-extracts-containing-epigallocatechin-gallate\/","title":{"rendered":"Regulation of green tea extracts containing (-)-epigallocatechin gallate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2022\/2340\">Regulation (EU) No 2022\/2340<\/a> amending Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1925\/2006 as regards green tea extracts containing (-)-epigallocatechin gallate was published on 1 December 2022 in the OJEU.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green tea is produced from the leaves of <em>Camellia sinensis<\/em>, without a fermentation step, resulting in the presence of catechins, of which the main substance is (-)-epigallocatechin gallate. Green tea catechins can be consumed in the form of traditional green tea infusions, reconstituted green tea-based beverages, or food supplements containing concentrated green tea extracts with very different levels of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on available data on the potential adverse effects of green tea catechins on the liver, clinical trials show that ingestion of doses equal to or greater than 800 mg\/day of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in the form of food supplements induces, in treated participants compared to control participants, a statistically significant increase in serum transaminases, which is indicative of liver damage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, the addition to foods or use in the manufacture of foods of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate from green tea extracts at doses equal to or greater than 800 mg per daily food portion should be prohibited. Green tea extracts containing (-)-epigallocatechin gallate are now listed in Annex III, Part B, of Regulation (EC) No 1925\/2006, and their addition to foods or use in food manufacturing is only authorised under the conditions specified in that annex.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regulation therefore introduces the following restrictions and requirements for green tea extracts containing (-)-epigallocatechin gallate added to foods:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The daily food portion must contain less than 800mg of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The label must state the maximum number of daily food portions, a warning against a daily intake equal to or greater than 800 mg of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, and the (-)-epigallocatechin gallate content per food portion. The label must also include the following warnings: &#8220;Should not be consumed if you are taking other green tea-containing products on the same day&#8221;, &#8220;Should not be consumed by pregnant or breastfeeding women or children under 18 years of age&#8221; and &#8220;Should not be consumed on an empty stomach&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foodstuffs containing green tea extracts with (-)-epigallocatechin gallate that do not comply with the requirements of this regulation and that were legally placed on the market before this regulation entered into force may remain on the market until 21 June 2023.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regulation enters into force on 21 December 2022.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that our ALL PHYTO laboratory is accredited by COFRAC for determining catechin content in green tea leaves according to ISO 14502-2 and the current EU Pharmacopoeia (chapter 2.2.29), Monograph 2668.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
