The decree authorising the reuse of treated wastewater (REUT) in the food industry (IAA) was put out for public consultation<\/a><\/strong> on 31 March.<\/p>\n\n

Unless an exemption applies, EU regulations require that water used in food industry processing be drinking water and meet the quality criteria for water intended for human consumption. French regulations also require that this water come from natural sources.<\/p>\n\n

As such, these regulatory requirements do not allow the use of water unfit for human consumption and treated within the food industry as part of food processing operations.<\/p>\n\n

However, under article L.1322-14 of the French Public Health Code, non-potable water may be used in the food industry under conditions to be defined in a decree.<\/p>\n\n

This draft decree must therefore define the conditions under which the reuse of wastewater is permitted, the authorised uses, and the microbiological and physico-chemical criteria that the reused water must meet.<\/p>\n\n

The objective is to reduce pressure on natural resources. This water may be reused for the preparation, processing and preservation of all foodstuffs intended for human consumption.<\/p>\n\n
