{"id":544349,"date":"2026-08-27T00:59:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/efsa-re-evaluates-the-tolerable-daily-intake-tdi-of-bisphenol-a\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T00:59:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:59:44","slug":"efsa-re-evaluates-the-tolerable-daily-intake-tdi-of-bisphenol-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/efsa-re-evaluates-the-tolerable-daily-intake-tdi-of-bisphenol-a\/","title":{"rendered":"EFSA re-evaluates the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of bisphenol A"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA has just <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2023.6857\">re-evaluated the health risks associated with the presence of bisphenol A<\/a> (BPA) in foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BPA is a substance used in combination with other chemicals to manufacture certain plastics (polycarbonate) and epoxy resins for varnishes and coatings. It is found in particular in the plastic used to make water dispensers, food storage containers and reusable beverage bottles, but also in the epoxy resins used in the protective coatings of tin cans and in tanks for food and beverages.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, EFSA established a temporary tolerable daily intake (t-TDI) of <strong>4 \u00b5g\/kg body weight per day<\/strong>. The TDI is the amount that can be ingested daily throughout life without posing an appreciable health risk.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TDI has just been re-evaluated <strong>to 0.2 ng\/kg body weight per day<\/strong>, i.e. 20,000 times lower than the previous value!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of bisphenol A in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles is authorised under regulation (EU) No 10\/2011; however, certain restrictions apply: BPA is prohibited in the manufacture of polycarbonate baby bottles, cups or bottles for infants and young children.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SML (specific migration limit) in foodstuffs is currently set at <strong>0.05 mg\/kg<\/strong> via <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32018R0213&amp;qid=1682326082988\">regulation (EU) 2018\/213<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In France, <strong>law no. 2012-1442<\/strong> of 24 December has, since 1 January 2015, suspended the manufacture, import, export and placing on the market of any packaging containing bisphenol A intended to hold food production.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that our laboratory is able to determine the <strong>bisphenol A<\/strong> content under COFRAC accreditation in products of plant origin and certain products of animal origin.
