Forever pollutants toxic to health and the environment<\/h3>\n\n

Per- and polyfluorinated compounds are widely used in industry, with more than 4,700 molecules, for their non-stick, waterproof, stain-resistant and heat-resistant properties. They are found in textiles, food packaging, cosmetics, plant protection products, kitchen utensils, varnishes and many other products. PFAS have particularly stable carbon-fluorine bonds, which results in very low degradation and increased persistence in the environment, hence their nickname \u00abforever pollutants<\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n

PFAS are not eliminated by the body, where they bioaccumulate, increasing risks to human health: high cholesterol levels, increased risk of breast, kidney and testicular cancer, disruption of liver function, hypothyroidism, risk of miscarriage, fertility problems, weakened immune system\u2026<\/p>\n\n

Managing PFAS risk in water<\/h3>\n\n

The order of 30 December 2022 on quality limits and references for water intended for human consumption<\/a> sets a parametric value for the sum of 20 PFAS at 0.10 \u03bcg\/L. The 20 regulated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are considered a concern for drinking water: PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoDA, PFTrDA, PFBS, PFPeS, PFHxS, PFHpS, PFOS, PFNS, PFDS, PFUnDS, PFDoDS, PFTrDS. According to the notice on the limits of quantification of \u00abparameter-matrix\u00bb pairs for the approval of laboratories carrying out analyses in the field of water and aquatic environments (version of 19\/10\/19), a LOQ of 0.002 \u03bcg\/L<\/strong> is set for 7 PFAS in fresh water<\/strong> (PFHxA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFDA, PFHxS, PFOS, PFDS). Drawing on its expertise in the analysis of organic contaminants in water, Phytocontrol laboratory meets regulatory requirements and offers analysis of 26 perfluorinated compounds in fresh, raw and atypical water (carbonated and highly mineralised). <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
