{"id":544289,"date":"2026-08-27T00:36:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/order-on-the-use-of-treated-wastewater-for-crop-irrigation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T00:36:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:36:09","slug":"order-on-the-use-of-treated-wastewater-for-crop-irrigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/order-on-the-use-of-treated-wastewater-for-crop-irrigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Order on the use of treated wastewater for crop irrigation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 28 December 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/jorf\/id\/JORFTEXT000048679665\">Order of 18 December 2023 on the conditions for the production and use of treated wastewater for crop irrigation<\/a> was published in the Official Journal.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This new order sets out the requirements applicable to treated wastewater for the following uses:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Irrigation of food crops eaten raw whose edible part is in direct contact with treated wastewater, and root vegetables eaten raw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irrigation of food crops eaten raw whose edible part grows above ground and is not in direct contact with treated wastewater, processed food crops and non-food crops, including those used to feed dairy or meat-producing animals (excluding fresh forage, pasture, industrial crops, energy crops and seed crops)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irrigation of fresh forage and pasture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irrigation of industrial crops, energy crops and seed crops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treated wastewater is water from collective wastewater treatment systems and non-collective sanitation systems with a gross organic pollution load greater than 1.2 kg of five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) per day, and for which the treatment levels set out in the authorisation order or specific requirements are met. This water must have undergone treatment for use under the conditions defined in this order.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This treated wastewater may be used if it meets the quality requirements set out in Annex II of the order.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four sanitary quality levels are defined (A, B, C and D), based on the parameters below:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suspended solids (mg\/L)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Five-day biochemical oxygen demand (mg\/L)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Escherichia coli (number\/100mL)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coliphages (F-specific RNA bacteriophages and\/or somatic phages). Total coliphages are chosen as the most appropriate viral indicator. However, if total coliphage analysis is not possible, at least one of the two (F-specific coliphages or somatic coliphages) must be analysed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clostridium perfringens. <em>Clostridium perfringens<\/em> spores are chosen as the most appropriate protozoan indicator. However, sulphite-reducing anaerobic bacteria and their spores offer an alternative solution if the concentration of <em>Clostridium perfringens<\/em> spores does not allow the required log10 reduction to be validated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turbidity (NTU)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legionella spp.: &lt; 1000 cfu\/l where there is a risk of aerosol formation. Intestinal nematodes (helminth eggs): \u2264 1 egg\/l for irrigation of pastures or fresh forage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treated wastewater is classified according to the quality level corresponding to the least favourable parameter result.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytocontrol holds national approval from the Ministry of Health and the Environment to carry out sampling and analyses for the sanitary control of water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will find details of our accreditations in our COFRAC technical annex No. 1-6066.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
