{"id":544274,"date":"2026-08-27T00:35:49","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/france-suspension-of-imports-of-fruit-and-vegetables-containing-thiacloprid\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T00:35:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:35:49","slug":"france-suspension-of-imports-of-fruit-and-vegetables-containing-thiacloprid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/france-suspension-of-imports-of-fruit-and-vegetables-containing-thiacloprid\/","title":{"rendered":"France: suspension of imports of fruit and vegetables containing thiacloprid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France has just published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/jorf\/id\/JORFTEXT000049191084\">order of 23 February 2023<\/a> suspending the introduction, import and placing on the market in <strong>France<\/strong> of <strong>fresh fruit and vegetables<\/strong> from countries outside the EU containing <strong>thiacloprid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?qid=1579083190445&amp;uri=CELEX%3A32020R0023\"><strong>Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020\/23<\/strong><\/a> did not renew the approval of <strong>thiacloprid<\/strong> as a plant protection substance. This substance has been banned in the EU since 03\/02\/2020. The grace periods for storage and use of existing stocks were set at <strong>03\/02\/2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This neonicotinoid has been banned for use in France since 2018, along with 4 other molecules from the same family.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lowering the MRLs to the limit of quantification has not yet been adopted by the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 8 February 2024, France asked the European Commission to lower the MRLs for thiacloprid, which may pose a serious risk to human health in the event of dietary exposure. It is classified as CMR-1.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the absence of any measure taken by the EC, France has decided to ban from the French market any fresh fruit or vegetables containing thiacloprid via the order of 23 February 2024:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Article 1:<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It is prohibited to import, introduce or place on the market, free of charge or for payment, fresh fruit or vegetables that have been treated with a plant protection product based on thiacloprid and are likely to contain quantifiable residues of this substance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order came into force on <strong>25\/02\/2024<\/strong> for a period of one year (unless the EU adopts measures before then).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 3 specifies that these provisions do not apply to fresh fruit and vegetables acquired by the importer or marketer no later than <strong>1 month<\/strong> after this order comes into force.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that your Phytocontrol laboratory offers analysis of thiacloprid and pesticide residues under COFRAC accreditation.
