<\/p>\n\n

Directive (EU) 2024\/3019<\/a> on urban wastewater treatment was published on 12 December 2024. It aims to protect the environment and human health by establishing rules on the collection, treatment and discharge of this water.<\/p>\n\n

This directive introduces several advances in the management of micropollutants<\/strong> in urban wastewater treatment.<\/p>\n\n

Member States shall establish a national system of cooperation and coordination between the competent authorities in the field of public health and the competent authorities responsible for urban wastewater treatment, in order to determine the relevant public health parameters that must be monitored, at a minimum, at the entry point of urban wastewater treatment plants, taking into account the recommendations of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), such as SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, poliovirus, influenza virus and other emerging pathogens.<\/p>\n\n

Regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known for their persistence, the directive introduces specific measures to monitor and reduce their presence in wastewater.<\/p>\n\n

Member States are required to set up monitoring systems to detect the presence of microplastics in urban wastewater. This regular monitoring will make it possible to assess microplastic concentrations and identify potential sources of pollution.<\/p>\n\n

The directive also highlights the importance of research and development of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment, in order to better remove emerging pollutants such as PFAS. Member States are encouraged to invest in sustainable solutions and promote industrial practices that reduce the use of these substances.<\/p>\n\n

Member States have a deadline to transpose this directive into national law and put in place the measures needed to comply with the new requirements.<\/p>\n\n
