<\/p>\n\n

Bisphenol A (BPA)<\/strong> is mainly used in the manufacture of epoxy resins, which form the basis of varnishes and coatings, such as those applied to the internal and external surfaces of metal food packaging (cans, tins and jar lids), as well as large tanks and vats used in food production. It is also used in the manufacture of certain plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, including those made of polycarbonate and polysulfone. BPA may also be used in printing inks, adhesives and other materials that are part of finished articles intended to come into contact with food.<\/p>\n\n

EU Regulation 2024\/3190<\/strong><\/a> has just banned its use, along with that of other hazardous bisphenols or hazardous bisphenol derivatives, in food contact materials. It thus repeals Regulation 2018\/213, which set a specific migration limit of 0.05 mg\/kg for BPA.<\/p>\n\n

The regulation comes into force on 20 January 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Limited exceptions, where no safe alternatives exist, and transitional provisions are provided to allow manufacturers time to adapt.<\/p>\n\n

In 2023, EFSA lowered the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for BPA to 0.2 ng\/kg body weight per day<\/strong> and concluded that BPA had potentially harmful effects on the immune system.<\/p>\n\n

In France, Law No. 2012-1442<\/strong> of 24 December has, since 1 January 2015, suspended the manufacture, import, export and marketing of any packaging containing bisphenol A intended to hold food products.<\/p>\n\n
