{"id":544148,"date":"2026-08-27T00:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/use-of-recycled-water-unfit-for-consumption-in-the-food-industry\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T00:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:14:17","slug":"use-of-recycled-water-unfit-for-consumption-in-the-food-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/use-of-recycled-water-unfit-for-consumption-in-the-food-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Use of recycled water unfit for consumption in the food industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Instruction-DGAL-2025-173-REUT-dans-les-IAA.pdf\">Technical instruction DGAL\/SDSSA\/2025-173<\/a> was published on 18 March 2025. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This instruction specifies the procedures for implementing water reuse in food sector companies, the categories of possible uses, and the applicable declaration and authorisation schemes for the production and use of water unfit for human consumption, reused for the preparation, processing and preservation of any foodstuffs and goods intended for human consumption. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different types of water can be reused in food companies: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recycled water from raw materials (e.g. water from milk following concentration operations, water extracted from sugar beet, etc.). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recycled process water (e.g. water recovered during a final rinsing step to be reused for a first rinse, intermediate rinses, etc.) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recycled treated wastewater (water generated by a company that has undergone, after treatment at a wastewater treatment plant, a second complementary treatment by a treatment unit.) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water reuse is not possible for primary production or activities related to animal feed. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recycled water from raw materials and recycled process water<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can be used without contact with foodstuffs (cleaning of premises, exterior of equipment, etc.); in direct contact with foodstuffs (rinsing, cleaning, disinfection of food contact surfaces, etc.); in direct contact with foodstuffs (washing, rinsing of a product, growth of a product, etc.); or as an ingredient in the composition of the finished product. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These uses must be declared by the establishment that produces the recycled water and by the establishment that uses it, to the DDecPP or DAAF of the department in which the company is located. The declaration includes a letter accompanied by the company&#8217;s updated PMS. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Establishments that already produce and\/or use this recycled water have until 7 July 2025 to make their declaration. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality requirements for this water, depending on the intended use, are set out in Appendix 2 of the order of 8 July 2024. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recycled treated wastewater (RTW)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be used without coming into contact with foodstuffs (cleaning of premises, exterior of equipment, etc.) and in direct and indirect contact with processed and unprocessed products. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the use of this water as an ingredient in the composition of final foodstuffs is prohibited. When this water comes into direct or indirect contact with foodstuffs, it must not be found in the final composition, except possibly in residual amounts. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any project for the production\/use of RTW is subject to authorisation by the departmental prefect. The operator must submit its authorisation request (CERFA and file) before starting the activity. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a favourable review of the request, the DDecPP draws up a draft prefectural order, which it forwards to the prefect for signature. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operator determines the expected quality level of the RTW and proves that the quality of this water is compatible with food safety objectives. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that Phytocontrol holds the national approval of the Ministry of Health and the Environment for carrying out sampling and analyses for water sanitary control. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find details of our accreditations in our COFRAC technical appendix No. 1-6066. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
