{"id":544066,"date":"2026-08-26T23:51:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/anses-extends-its-surveillance-of-pfas\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:51:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:51:35","slug":"anses-extends-its-surveillance-of-pfas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/anses-extends-its-surveillance-of-pfas\/","title":{"rendered":"ANSES extends its surveillance of PFAS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANSES has just published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anses.fr\/system\/files\/ERCA2022-SA-0198-RA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two expert reports on PFAS in different compartments<\/a><strong>. <\/strong>The 1<sup>st<\/sup> report provides an overview of PFAS contamination and the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> report categorises PFAS and proposes a surveillance strategy. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European regulation currently covers only certain uses and certain PFAS. In foodstuffs, 4 PFAS are regulated and monitored in certain foods (eggs, meat products and fishery products) and 20 PFAS are listed in French decrees and the European directive concerning water intended for human consumption, and will become subject to mandatory monitoring from 1 January 2026. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between September 2023 and September 2024, the health agency compiled and analysed nearly 2 million data points relating to 142 PFAS. This data was collected from various environments in France: environment, food, consumer products and biomonitoring.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most frequently analysed molecules, across all compartments, are those targeted by the various regulations.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results show that systematic monitoring of these compounds in all compartments and sub-compartments needs to be improved.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANSES has also developed a method for categorising<strong> <\/strong>PFAS. This categorisation methodology is based on cross-referencing two scores: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A total occurrence score (OS), based on the presence of the substance in the various compartments; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A total toxicity score (TS), based on the toxicity of the substance. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of this process, 105 additional PFAS were identified. In total, 247 PFAS, including TFA, have been incorporated into the surveillance strategy. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANSES proposes three surveillance strategies: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ongoing surveillance: for the most concerning and recurrent substances, as part of national monitoring plans; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exploratory surveillance, carried out on an ad hoc basis: for substances that are not currently being tested for, or are insufficiently tested for; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Localised surveillance: for substances corresponding to confirmed or suspected local sources of contamination, whether the contamination is historic or ongoing. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, ANSES recommends ongoing surveillance of 22 to 24 PFAS (i.e. 18 to 20 PFAS in addition to those already regulated) and exploratory surveillance of up to 12 additional PFAS (including TFA) in food sub-compartments. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It recommends ongoing surveillance of 21 to 25 PFAS (including TFA) and exploratory surveillance of up to 15 additional PFAS in aquatic environments and drinking water. In drinking water in particular, ANSES recommends surveillance of 5 additional PFAS beyond those currently regulated. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that your Phytocontrol laboratory offers accredited PFAS analysis in water and foodstuffs.
