Their accumulation in the body can cause harmful effects over time.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human food<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 2023\/915<\/strong> sets maximum levels of <strong>lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and nickel<\/strong> in human food. MRLs are also defined in <strong>Regulation (EC) 396\/2005<\/strong> for <strong>copper<\/strong> and <strong>mercury<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LEAD<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulated matrices are varied. They include plant-based raw materials such as fruit, vegetables, cereals, legumes and spices, as well as processed products such as wine, fruit juices and oils. Lead is also regulated in products of animal origin, such as meat, fishery products, bivalve molluscs, raw milk and honey. Maximum levels are also set for finished food supplements, salt and products intended for infants and young children.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CADMIUM<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulated matrices include fruit, vegetables, oilseeds, dried legumes, cereals, meat, fishery products and bivalve molluscs, chocolate products, salt, finished food supplements and products intended for infants and young children. <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32023R1510&amp;qid=1690202559050\">Regulation 2023\/1510<\/a>, applicable since 10 August 2023, introduced a limit for tiger nuts and amended maximum levels for certain cultivated mushrooms (other than oyster mushrooms, shiitake and button mushrooms).<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MERCURY<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulated matrices mainly include fish, with different levels depending on species, as well as finished food supplements and salt. MRLs for mercury are also defined in Regulation 2018\/73 amending Regulation (EC) 396\/2005 for matrices of plant and animal origin (excluding fish). <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32022H1342&amp;qid=1730976667218\">Recommendation 2022\/1342<\/a> recommends monitoring the presence of <strong>methylmercury<\/strong> and <strong>total mercury<\/strong> in fish, crustaceans and molluscs, taking into account the type of production (farmed or wild-caught).<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">INORGANIC ARSENIC<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inorganic arsenic is regulated mainly in rice and its derived products, fruit juices and foodstuffs intended for infants and young children.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TOTAL ARSENIC<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, total arsenic is regulated only in salt.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NICKEL<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32024R1987&amp;qid=1724161368660\">Regulation 2024\/1987<\/a> sets maximum levels of nickel in tree nuts, vegetables, seaweed, dried legumes, oilseeds, cereals, cocoa and chocolate products, foods intended for infants and young children, as well as fruit juices, nectars and vegetable juices. These limits will apply from <strong>1 July 2025<\/strong>, except for <strong>cereals<\/strong>, for which the application date is set at <strong>1 July 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32024H0907&amp;qid=1730976609242\">Recommendation 2024\/907<\/a> recommends monitoring the presence of nickel in food supplements, chocolate, spreads (chocolate and tree nut based), cocoa beans, cereal products (in particular breakfast cereals, cereal flakes and oat milling products), ready-to-eat soups, coffee, tea, vegetables, seaweed, oilseeds, soy-based products (such as tofu and soy drinks), legumes, tree nuts, fish and other seafood products.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">COPPER<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MRLs for copper are set in Regulation (EC) 396\/2005 for raw materials of plant and animal origin.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal feed<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Directive 2002\/32\/EC<\/strong> sets maximum levels of total arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and fluorine in animal feed. Regarding inorganic arsenic, a <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/monitoring-of-inorganic-arsenic-in-animal-feed\/\">monitoring recommendation<\/a> for animal feed was published in 2022.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A draft text plans to amend the maximum levels of total arsenic, cadmium and lead set out in Directive 2002\/32\/EC.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nickel content should be added for the following animal feed raw materials: fatty acids esterified with glycerol, mono-, di- and triglycerides of fatty acids, salts of fatty acids, crude fatty acids, distilled pure fatty acids, crude glycerine and glycerine.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water intended for human consumption<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/jorf\/id\/JORFTEXT000046849403#:~:text=La%20limite%20de%20qualit%C3%A9%20est%20fix%C3%A9e%20%C3%A0%2010%20%C2%B5g%2F%20L,ici%20au%201er%20janvier%202036.\">order of 30 December 2022<\/a> sets the quality limits and reference values for certain metals in water intended for human consumption.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quality limits are defined for antimony, arsenic, boron, cadmium, chromium, chromium VI, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium and uranium.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reference values are also set for total aluminium, barium, copper, total iron and manganese.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
