{"id":30685,"date":"2023-12-08T11:09:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T10:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=30685"},"modified":"2026-08-27T23:57:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T21:57:46","slug":"new-labelling-rules-for-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/new-labelling-rules-for-wines\/","title":{"rendered":"New labelling rules for wine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32021R2117\"><strong>EU Regulation 2021\/2117<\/strong><\/a>, published on 6 December 2021, amended EU Regulation 1308\/2013 concerning agricultural products. From <strong>8 December 2023<\/strong>, it requires the labelling of two additional pieces of information for <strong>wines<\/strong> and <strong>vine products<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>nutrition declaration<\/strong> referred to in Article 9(1)(l) of EU Regulation No. 1169\/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>list of ingredients<\/strong> referred to in Article 9(1)(b) of Regulation 1169\/2011<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These labelling requirements apply to wines, liqueur wines, sparkling wines, semi-sparkling wines and grape musts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>mandatory nutrition declaration<\/strong> includes the following elements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>energy value;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the amount of fat, including saturated fatty acids;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the amount of carbohydrate, including sugars;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the amount of protein;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the amount of salt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The content of this <strong>nutrition declaration<\/strong> on the label may be limited to the energy value alone, using the letter E followed by the value, provided that the full nutrition declaration and the list of ingredients can be accessed electronically, for example via a QR code.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ingredients<\/strong> must be labelled in descending order of weight at the time they are used in the manufacture of the product. Ingredients that make up less than 2% of the finished product may be listed in a different order after the other ingredients.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flavourings, food additives and food enzymes are included in the definition of an ingredient and must be labelled. Allergenic ingredients (sulphites, ovalbumin, lysozyme, casein) must also be highlighted in accordance with Article 21 of Regulation 1169\/2011.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, wines and vine products produced before 8 December 2023 are not affected by these new labelling rules and may be placed on the market until stocks run out. On the other hand, all wines and vine products produced from 8 December 2023 onwards must comply with these two new requirements.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission published a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=OJ:C_202301190\"><strong>&#8220;questions and answers&#8221; notice on the implementation of these new labelling provisions<\/strong><\/a> at the end of November.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that your Phytocontrol laboratory offers nutritional value analysis for wine and vine products.
