{"id":30203,"date":"2023-07-18T09:34:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T07:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=30203"},"modified":"2026-08-27T23:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T21:58:08","slug":"radioactivity-repeal-of-regulation-2021-1533-for-foodstuffs-from-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/radioactivity-repeal-of-regulation-2021-1533-for-foodstuffs-from-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Radioactivity: repeal of Regulation 2021\/1533 for foodstuffs from Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32023R1453&amp;qid=1689603447385\">Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023\/1453<\/a> has just repealed Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021\/1533 imposing special conditions on the import of food and feed originating in or consigned from Japan following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulation EU 2021\/1533 set maximum limits for the <strong>sum of Caesium-134 and Caesium-137<\/strong> in foodstuffs intended for human consumption and in animal feed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As no exceedance of these maximum radionuclide levels has been observed at import into the EU since June 2011, the European Commission considered it no longer necessary to maintain the measures provided for by this implementing regulation to ensure a high level of protection of animal and public health.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regulation enters into force on <strong>3 August 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other regulations set maximum limits for certain radionuclides in food:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regulation EU 2020\/1158<\/strong> on the conditions governing imports of food and feed originating in third countries following the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cumulative maximum tolerance levels for radioactive contamination by <strong>Caesium-137<\/strong> must not exceed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>370 Bq\/kg<\/strong> for milk, dairy products and food for infants and young children\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>600 Bq\/kg<\/strong> for all other products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regulation 2016\/52<\/strong> also sets maximum permitted levels of radioactive contamination by <strong>Iodine-131<\/strong> for food and feed following a nuclear accident or any other radiological emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Phytocontrol laboratory offers analysis of gamma-emitting radionuclides in an energy range of 40 KeV to 2,000 KeV in solid and liquid foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
