Their frequent use, combined with their persistence in the environment, has led to widespread environmental contamination.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contamination of foodstuffs by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is mainly due to their bioaccumulation in aquatic and terrestrial food chains.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA&#8217;s latest opinion, dating from July 2020, concludes that PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS may have effects on development, have adverse effects on serum cholesterol, the liver and the immune system, and affect birth weight.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of <strong>4.4 ng\/kg<\/strong> body weight has been set for the sum of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32022R2388&amp;qid=1682324792823\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 2022\/2388<\/strong><\/a> sets maximum levels for <strong>PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and the sum of the 4<\/strong> in the following foodstuffs:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eggs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meat products: meat and edible offal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fishery products: fish, crustaceans and bivalve molluscs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These maximum levels have been applicable since <strong>1 January 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32022H1431&amp;qid=1682324818153\"><strong>Recommendation (EU) 2022\/1431<\/strong><\/a> sets indicative values for PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS in the following foodstuffs:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fruit and vegetables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food for infants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These values should not affect the possibility of placing products on the market, but investigations should be carried out in the event of exceedance.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also recommended to monitor PFAS in algae, cereals, nuts, oilseeds, food for infants and young children, foodstuffs of animal origin, non-alcoholic beverages, wine and beer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your laboratory is able to analyse <strong>17 PFAS<\/strong> in foodstuffs, including the 4 regulated ones: <strong>PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
