<\/p>\n\n

Following the numerous food alerts concerning the detection of Ethylene Oxide over the past two years and its detection in food additives, Regulation (EU) No 2022\/1396<\/a> has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n

This amends the Annex to Regulation (EU) No 231\/2012 establishing specifications for food additives listed in Regulation (EC) No 1333\/2008, with regard to the presence of ethylene oxide in food additives.<\/p>\n\n

As a reminder, ethylene oxide is a substance of concern classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction under Regulation (EC) No 1272\/2008. It is not approved either as a biocidal product or as an active substance for use in plant protection products.<\/p>\n\n

To ensure consumer safety, ethylene oxide must be banned, regardless of its origin, in all food additives.<\/p>\n\n

The applicable maximum limit has been set at the limit of quantification in these products.<\/p>\n\n

The annex to Regulation (EU) No 231\/2012 is amended as follows:<\/p>\n\n

\u00abEthylene oxide may not be used for sterilisation in food additives.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

No residue of ethylene oxide [sum of ethylene oxide and 2-chloro-ethanol, expressed as ethylene oxide (*)] exceeding 0.1 mg\/kg, regardless of its origin, may be present in the food additives listed in Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 1333\/2008, including in mixtures of food additives.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

(*) Namely ethylene oxide + 0.55* 2-chloro-ethanol<\/em>.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n
