{"id":24151,"date":"2021-09-24T15:57:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T13:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=24151"},"modified":"2026-08-28T00:23:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T22:23:48","slug":"food-fraud-report-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/food-fraud-report-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of the 2020 annual report on food fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Food Fraud Network has just published <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2021-09\/ff_ffn_annual-report_2020_1.pdf\">its 2020 annual report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraudulent activities affecting the food supply chain can pose a risk to consumers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of requests for administrative assistance regarding suspected food fraud rose from 292 in 2019 to <strong>349 in 2020<\/strong>, an increase of <strong>20%.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is the number of fraud suspicions by product type:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oils and fats<\/strong>: 51 (olive oil was the most frequently reported).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fish and derived products<\/strong>: 34 (illegal treatments: undeclared water addition, nitrates, carbon monoxide)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poultry and derived products<\/strong>: 28<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Honey and royal jelly: 25<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meat and derived products (excluding poultry): 25<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food supplements, fortified foods, dietary foods: 22<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fruit and vegetables: 21<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wines and alcoholic beverages: 12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant protection products: 11<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cephalopods, crustaceans and derived products: 10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Herbs and spices: 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milk and dairy products: 8<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other products: 43<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five types of non-conformities were listed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>37%<\/strong> relate to <strong>mislabelling<\/strong>, for example when olive oil that is not extra virgin is presented as extra virgin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25%<\/strong> relate to <strong>document<\/strong> falsification or traceability issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>21%<\/strong> relate to <strong>substitution\/dilution\/addition\/removal in the product<\/strong>: this refers to the process of blending or replacing a high-value ingredient with a low-value one, such as watering down wine, for example.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>13%<\/strong> concern <strong>unapproved treatment and\/or process<\/strong>: nitrite-treated tuna.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>4%<\/strong> concern <strong>infringement of intellectual property rights<\/strong>: this refers to counterfeit products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adulteration is the third most common cause of fraud, accounting for 21% of cases.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytocontrol can help you authenticate your products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laboratory can offer 3 types of analyses carried out using NGS technology:<br\/>\u2022 Meat packs (more than 6,000 species)<br\/>\u2022 Fish packs (more than 6,000 species)<br\/>\u2022 Plant packs (more than 5,000 species)<br\/>These packs are available individually or combined according to your needs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This innovative technology makes it possible to prove the authenticity of the species present in your products, with much more comprehensive coverage than traditional methods.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytocontrol&#8217;s experts support you on these issues related to fraud and food safety.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For any requests, please contact our customer service:<br\/>Dedicated line <a href=\"tel:+33%20800%20900%20775\">+33 800 900 775<\/a> or by email <a href=\"mailto:service-clients@phytocontrol.com\">service-clients@phytocontrol.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Food Fraud Network has just published its 2020 annual report.
