Regulation (EU) 2020\/1255<\/a> has just been published in the OJEU. It sets maximum levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in powders of foodstuffs of plant origin used for the preparation of beverages, with the exception of cocoa bean and cocoa fibre products:<\/p>\n\n

Benzo(a)pyrene = 10 \u00b5g\/kg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Sum of benzo(a)pyrene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and chrysene = 50 \u00b5g\/kg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

These levels were set to encourage good drying practices for these powders.<\/p>\n\n

The regulation also provides for an unlimited-time derogation for the local production and consumption of certain traditionally smoked meats, meat products, fish and fishery products in certain member states.<\/p>\n\n

Member States may authorise the placing on the market of these products in their territory, intended to be consumed in their territory, provided they comply with the maximum levels applicable before 1 September 2014, namely 5 \u03bcg\/kg for benzo(a)pyrene and 30 \u03bcg\/kg for the sum of benzo(a)pyrene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and chrysene.<\/p>\n\n

The regulation applies from 28 September 2020; however, Article 2 of the regulation specifies that powders of foodstuffs of plant origin legally placed on the market before 28\/09\/2020 may remain on the market until 28\/03\/2021.<\/p>\n\n
