{"id":20143,"date":"2020-10-13T09:24:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T07:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=20143"},"modified":"2026-09-20T12:50:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T10:50:54","slug":"publication-of-the-2019-rasff-annual-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/publication-of-the-2019-rasff-annual-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of the 2019 RASFF annual report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/sites\/food\/files\/safety\/docs\/rasff_annual_report_2019.pdf\">2019 RASFF annual report<\/a> for food and feed products has just been published.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, 4,118 notifications were submitted through the RASFF portal, including 1,173 alert notifications, 546 information notifications for follow-up, 882 information notifications and 1,499 border rejection notifications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to 2018, the number of alert notifications involving a serious health risk increased by 5%.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HUMAN FOOD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pathogenic micro-organisms:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">575 notifications were reported concerning pathogenic micro-organisms, mainly on products of animal origin. This represents a 17% increase compared to 2018.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Salmonella<\/em> is the most frequently reported pathogen in foodstuffs in EU member states (371 notifications, up 51%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em> in cold-smoked fish products and in ready-to-eat meat products was a major cause of foodborne outbreaks in 2019. It was reported 16 times in French cheeses (often made from raw milk).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">32 notifications related to shiga toxin-producing <em>Escherichia coli<\/em> were issued. Contamination, of animal or human origin, is most often found in meat products (not heat-treated) (15 notifications) and cheeses (14 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Allergens:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">194 notifications were issued, up 30%.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milk, gluten and soy are the most frequently reported allergens, and cereals and bakery products are the most often notified products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traces of allergens are often reported in foods due to cross-contamination, for example on the same production lines as other products containing allergens. This presence of allergens is not regulated at EU level.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mycotoxins:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">534 notifications were issued.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aflatoxins are the most frequently reported mycotoxins, particularly in nuts from third countries. The most frequently notified country was Turkey (104 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding ochratoxin A, it is found in raisins and dried figs, and Turkey is the most frequently notified country.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pesticides:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">253 pesticide-related notifications were issued in 2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recurrent notifications concerned fruit and vegetables, with chlorpyrifos (banned earlier in the year) being the most frequently found substance, as well as teas from China.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ANIMAL FEED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 325 notifications were issued.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notifications concerning animal feed represent around 8% of the total volume of RASFF notifications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pathogenic micro-organisms:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All 166 notifications concern salmonella, in various types of raw materials, but also in pet food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mycotoxins:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost all notifications concern aflatoxin, mainly reported in peanuts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Microbial contamination:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most notifications concern excessive numbers of enterobacteria in raw materials derived from animal by-products.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"591\" height=\"836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019.png\" alt=\"Infographie rapport annuel rasff 2019\" class=\"wp-image-19932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019.png 591w, https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019-103x146.png 103w, https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019-35x50.png 35w, https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/10\/infographie_rapport-annuel-rasff-2019-53x75.png 53w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019 RASFF annual report for food and feed products has just been published.
