{"id":18298,"date":"2020-07-20T09:24:21","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T07:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=18298"},"modified":"2026-08-28T00:24:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T22:24:48","slug":"anses-opinion-on-membrane-processes-for-swimming-pool-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/anses-opinion-on-membrane-processes-for-swimming-pool-water\/","title":{"rendered":"ANSES opinion on membrane processes for swimming pool water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 3 July 2020, the ANSES published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anses.fr\/fr\/system\/files\/EAUX2018SA0034Ra.pdf\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opinion<\/a> concerning the use of membrane processes employed for filtering swimming pool water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two types of swimming pool water contaminants:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Particulate matter, such as<br\/>hair or skin flakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dissolved organic matter, such as<br\/>urine or sweat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pool water must be filtered, disinfected and disinfecting to ensure the health safety of bathers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public swimming pool water is disinfected using chlorine-based products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chlorine can react with particulate matter and dissolved compounds to form disinfection by-products (DBPs), which cause harmful effects on human health such as skin and eye irritation and respiratory damage. Studies have also highlighted the carcinogenic and mutagenic properties of certain by-products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suitable water treatment aimed at eliminating DBP precursors and DBPs themselves must therefore be implemented to reduce the exposure of swimmers and staff to these compounds.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, sand filtration is the most widespread method. It removes most suspended solids (SS), particularly when a coagulation\/flocculation step is carried out upstream.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this technique used alone has its limits, as it does not systematically allow regulatory limits to be met. To obtain pool water compliant with legislation, operators add fresh water beyond the 30L per bather per day set by regulations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Membrane filtration processes offer an interesting alternative to sand filtration, as they eliminate some of its negative effects.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The characteristics of membrane filtration processes offer an alternative to sand filtration of swimming pool water and help offset some of the negative effects noted above (greater retention of micro-organisms depending on the membrane selected, system compactness, higher washing frequency, reduced water consumption).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANSES defines membrane filtration as <em>\u201ca physical separation process in the liquid phase using a membrane that is both permeable and selective, known as permselective. This membrane, depending on its intrinsic characteristics and mode of use, acts as a barrier allowing the transfer of certain compounds and the retention of others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are four types of membrane processes: reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and microfiltration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of these technologies is highly effective and produces water of excellent quality, with much lower turbidity than sand filtration and better retention of micro-organisms.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The various membranes can replace the filters currently used to \u201cclarify\u201d swimming pool water. However, to also eliminate DBP precursors and DBPs themselves, ANSES recommends implementing a hybrid process (combining several treatments, in particular including a stage\/step using activated carbon).
