Regulation (EU) 2020\/749<\/a><\/strong> on maximum residue levels for chlorate has just been published in the OJEU.<\/p>\n\n

Chlorates are pesticides banned in the EU; all authorisations for plant protection products containing them were withdrawn following the publication of Decision 2008\/865\/EC.<\/p>\n\n

No MRL had been set, meaning the default MRL of 0.01 mg\/kg applied to all foodstuffs and feed listed in Annex I of Regulation 396\/2005 and its amendments.<\/p>\n\n

Chlorate is also a substance obtained as a by-product from the use of chlorine-based disinfectants in the treatment of foodstuffs and drinking water. The current situation, in which chlorate residues are detectable in foodstuffs, results from these uses.<\/p>\n\n

EFSA acknowledged that, despite the use of good practices, it is currently not possible to achieve chlorate residue levels compliant with the default MRL of 0.01 mg\/kg.<\/p>\n\n

In accordance with the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable), provisional MRLs have therefore been set for chlorate, taking these uses into account.<\/p>\n\n

These MRLs are applicable from 28\/06\/2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
