{"id":17905,"date":"2020-05-19T17:37:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T15:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=17905"},"modified":"2026-08-28T00:25:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T22:25:15","slug":"publication-of-the-2019-annual-report-on-food-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/publication-of-the-2019-annual-report-on-food-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of the 2019 annual report on food fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European network for combating food fraud\nhas just published its <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/sites\/food\/files\/safety\/docs\/ff_ffn_annual-report_2019.pdf\">2019 annual report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraudulent activities that impact the food chain\ncan pose a risk to consumers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of requests for administrative assistance for\nsuspected food fraud rose from 234 in 2018 to 292 in 2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is the number of fraud suspicions by product\ntype:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oils and fats: 44. Olive oil was<br\/>the most reported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fish and fish products: 42<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meat and meat products (excluding<br\/>poultry): 38<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fruit and vegetables: 28<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poultry and poultry products: 16<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Herbs and spices: 12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cereals and cereal products: 11<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcoholic beverages: 10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nuts, seeds and derived products: 10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other products: 12<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five types of non-conformities were listed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>47% concerning incorrect labelling, in particular<br\/>the ORGANIC claim on products showing pesticide residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20% concerning substitution \/ dilution \/<br\/>addition \/ removal in the product: meat-based products in which<br\/>beef was replaced by pork or horse, but also olive<br\/>leaves in oregano, saffron cut with stamen fibres from<br\/>another species, and the presence of low-cost rice in basmati rice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16% relating to unapproved treatment and\/or process:<br\/>unauthorised pesticides, tuna treated with nitrite or carbon monoxide<br\/>used to improve the product&#8217;s colour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15% concerning non-conformities in<br\/>documents: missing or falsified documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2% relating to intellectual property rights<br\/>infringement: fraud involving Geographical Indications, PDO, PGI,<br\/>often on wines or olive oil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adulteration is therefore the second most common cause of\nfraud, accounting for 20% of cases.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytocontrol\ncan provide you with solutions to authenticate your products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nlaboratory can offer 3 types of analysis carried out using NGS\ntechnology:<br\/>\n\u2022 Meat Packs (over 6,000 species)<br\/>\n\u2022 Fish Packs (over 6,000 species)<br\/>\n\u2022 Plant Packs (over 5,000 species)<br\/>\nThese packs are available individually or combined according to your needs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This\ninnovative technology makes it possible to prove the authenticity of the species\npresent in your products with much more comprehensive coverage than traditional\nmethods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European network for combating food fraud has just published its 2019 annual report.
