{"id":17894,"date":"2020-05-25T17:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=17894"},"modified":"2026-09-19T22:20:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T20:20:22","slug":"publication-of-regulation-eu-n2020-685-on-perchlorate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/publication-of-regulation-eu-n2020-685-on-perchlorate\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of Regulation (EU) No 2020\/685 on perchlorate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first European alerts (RASFF) relating to the presence of perchlorate in foodstuffs were issued in 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a reminder, perchlorate is a substance naturally present in the environment, in nitrate and potassium deposits.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also a pollutant resulting from the use of nitrate-based fertilisers and the use of ammonium perchlorate in various industrial processes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also form during the degradation of sodium hypochlorite used to disinfect water and can thus contaminate drinking water supplies. Water, soil and fertilisers are considered potential sources of perchlorate contamination in foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2014, EFSA published a scientific opinion on the health risks relating to perchlorate. The CONTAM Panel judged that exposure to this substance was potentially of concern.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, Recommendation (EU) 2015\/682 was published to collect additional data on the presence of perchlorate in food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, EFSA carried out an assessment of human exposure to perchlorate, which highlighted a risk to human health from both chronic and short-term exposure.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32020R0685&amp;from=FR\">Regulation (EU) No 2020\/685 of 20 May 2020 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881\/2006<\/a> has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This text sets maximum levels for perchlorate in certain foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be applicable from 1 July 2020.
