The 2018 RASFF annual report<\/a> for food and feed products has just been published.
\nIn 2018, 3,699 notifications were transmitted through the RASFF portal, including 1,118 alert notifications, 493 information for follow-up notifications, 675 information notifications and 1,401 border rejection notifications.
\nCompared to 2017, the number of alert notifications involving a serious health risk increased by 19%.<\/p>\n

HUMAN FOOD<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pathogenic microorganisms<\/u>:
\n492 notifications were reported concerning pathogenic microorganisms, mainly on products of animal origin. This represents a 19% increase compared to 2017.
\nSalmonella<\/em> is the most frequently reported pathogen in foodstuffs from EU member countries (246 notifications, up 19%).
\nContamination by Listeria monocytogenes<\/em> is mainly found in foods of animal origin. Nevertheless, the main multi-country foodborne outbreak linked to frozen maize in 2018 was a reminder that Listeria<\/em> contamination could also occur in other foods, particularly those not thermally treated before consumption. Recurring notifications reported the presence of Listeria<\/em> in cheeses made from raw milk from France.
\nRegarding noroviruses, 47 notifications were reported, mainly on live oysters but also in various types of berries.
\n28 notifications related to shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli<\/em> were issued. This contamination was found in meat products without thermal treatment and in cheeses.<\/p>\n

Allergens<\/u>:
\n149 notifications were issued. They are up 31%.
\nMilk, gluten and nuts are the most frequently reported allergens, and ready meals and snacks are the most often notified.
\nVery often, traces of allergens are reported in foods due to cross-contamination, for example on the same production lines as other allergen-containing products. This presence of allergens is not regulated at EU level.<\/p>\n

Mycotoxins<\/u>:
\n569 notifications were issued.
\nAflatoxins are the most reported mycotoxins in 2018, on hazelnuts, nut products and seeds from Argentina, Turkey and the USA.
\nWith 33 notifications, the number of ochratoxin A notifications in raisins from Turkey increased significantly. Other notifications mainly concerned dried figs, also from Turkey.<\/p>\n

Pesticides<\/u>:
\n237 notifications relating to pesticides were issued in 2018. They are up 27%.
\nThe most recurring notifications concerned sweet peppers and lemons from Turkey, tea and dried goji berries from China, and rice from India.<\/p>\n

ANIMAL FEED<\/strong><\/p>\n

A total of 313 notifications were issued.
\nNotifications concerning animal feed represent approximately 9% of the total volume of RASFF notifications.<\/p>\n

Pathogenic microorganisms<\/u>:
\nAll 144 notifications concern salmonella, in different types of raw materials, but also in pet food.<\/p>\n

Mycotoxins<\/u>:
\nAlmost all notifications concern aflatoxin, mainly reported in peanuts.<\/p>\n

Microbial contamination<\/u>:
\nMost notifications concern too high a number of enterobacteria in raw materials derived from animal by-products.<\/p>\n
