Regulation (EU) 2019\/1381<\/a> on the transparency and sustainability of the EU risk assessment in the food chain was published in the EU Official Journal on 6 September 2019.<\/p>\n

This regulation amends the general food law (Regulation EC 178\/2002), as well as 8 other texts relating to GMOs, feed additives, smoke flavourings, materials in contact with foodstuffs, additives, food enzymes and flavourings, and plant protection products and novel foods.<\/p>\n

This regulation aims to:<\/p>\n

– ensure greater transparency, by giving citizens automatic and immediate access to all safety information submitted by industry as part of the risk assessment process<\/p>\n

– create a common European register of commissioned studies, to ensure that companies applying for authorisation submit all relevant information and do not withhold unfavourable studies<\/p>\n

– allow additional studies to be commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority at the Commission’s request, funded by the EU budget<\/p>\n

– provide for consultation of stakeholders and the public on studies submitted by industry to support product authorisation applications<\/p>\n

– strengthen Member States’ involvement in the governance structure of the European Food Safety Authority and its scientific panels<\/p>\n

– strengthen risk communication to citizens, with joint actions aimed at building consumer trust by raising public awareness and understanding and better explaining the scientific opinions issued by the European Food Safety Authority, as well as the basis for risk management decisions<\/p>\n
